HIV/AIDS Nursing

HIV/AIDS Nursing focuses on delivering comprehensive, stigma-free, evidence-based care to individuals living with or at risk for HIV. This session explores how nurses support prevention, testing, treatment adherence, symptom management, and long-term health monitoring across diverse populations and care settings. Participants at the Nursing Conference will gain insight into evolving therapies, patient communication strategies, and community engagement. Concepts from HIV clinical care practices reinforce this session by highlighting best practices in antiretroviral therapy support, risk-reduction counseling, and chronic condition management.

Effective HIV/AIDS Nursing begins with early diagnosis and prevention. This session examines how nurses provide testing, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) education, post-exposure protocols, and culturally sensitive outreach that encourages high-risk individuals to seek timely care. Participants will explore strategies to reduce stigma, address fear, and build trust in communities deeply affected by HIV.

Treatment adherence is central to HIV management. This session discusses how nurses help patients understand medication schedules, manage side effects, coordinate follow-up visits, and address barriers such as mental health issues, unstable housing, or transportation. Participants will analyze techniques such as motivational interviewing, simplified regimen education, and long-acting injectable therapy support. The session also highlights how viral suppression not only improves personal health but prevents transmission.

Chronic care is another focus, as many people with HIV now live long, full lives. Nurses will learn how to support monitoring for comorbidities such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, liver conditions, and cognitive changes. This session explores how interprofessional teams collaborate to manage symptoms, reduce complications, and provide ongoing emotional and social support.

The session also discusses the importance of trauma-informed care. Participants will explore how past stigma, discrimination, or medical mistrust affect engagement and adherence. Nurses will consider strategies to create welcoming environments, use inclusive language, and address sensitive concerns without judgment.

Finally, HIV/AIDS Nursing requires community-centered approaches. This session highlights how nurses collaborate with public health agencies, outreach programs, peer navigators, and advocacy groups to strengthen prevention and care networks. Participants will reflect on how social determinants such as poverty, violence, and limited access to primary care influence outcomes, and how holistic interventions promote empowerment and long-term wellness.
