Oncology Rehabilitation

Oncology Rehabilitation focuses on restoring physical function, improving quality of life, and supporting survivors at every phase of the cancer care continuum. This session explores how rehabilitation professionals and nurses collaborate to manage treatment-related side effects, rebuild strength, reduce disability, and enhance long-term wellbeing. At a Nursing Conference, oncology rehabilitation is highlighted because cancer therapies often lead to fatigue, neuropathy, mobility loss, cognitive changes, emotional distress, and reduced functional capacity. A closely aligned concept, cancer survivorship rehabilitation, reinforces customized care plans that address both immediate and long-term challenges following diagnosis, treatment, and remission.

Participants examine the multidimensional impacts of cancer interventions—including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, hormonal therapies, and targeted agents—on physical and cognitive health. The session reviews assessment frameworks for identifying limitations in strength, balance, coordination, endurance, swallowing, speech, and cognition. Rehabilitation goals include pain reduction, fatigue management, functional restoration, scar mobility, lymphedema control, and reintegration into daily activities.

A major focus is specialized rehabilitation pathways. Participants explore prehabilitation strategies that optimize resilience before treatment; intra-treatment interventions that manage side effects and prevent deconditioning; and post-treatment programs that address long-term effects such as neuropathy, range-of-motion limits, bone density changes, and cardiopulmonary restrictions. Case scenarios illustrate rehabilitation roles in breast cancer recovery, head-and-neck cancer, bone marrow transplantation, pelvic malignancies, and pediatric oncology.

The session also examines the role of psychosocial support—addressing fear, anxiety, depression, role transitions, and social isolation. Collaboration with physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, oncology nurses, and exercise specialists is emphasized to ensure comprehensive care planning. Technology integration—including remote monitoring, rehabilitation apps, tele-consult follow-ups, and home-exercise digital support—is also reviewed.

The session concludes by highlighting that Oncology Rehabilitation is integral to holistic cancer care, enabling survivors to regain independence, improve confidence, and enhance health-related quality of life.
